DRUG TITLE

Proscar (Finasteride)

APPLICATION

Proscar is a steroid reductase inhibitor that is used to treat urinary problems (benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)) and for treating prostate cancer. BPH is caused due to an enlarged prostate and Proscar makes it smaller by reducing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and helps reduce the symptoms of BPH.

MODE OF APPLICATION

Use Proscar as directed by your doctor.

• The recommended dosage for men only, one 5-mg tablets a day.
• You may take Proscar either with a meal or between meals.
• Continue to use Proscar even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
• Take your medicine regularly every day at the same time.

THE MECHANISM OF ACTION

Proscar is an enzyme inhibitor. It works by reducing levels of the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is the main cause of prostate growth, lowering DHT leads to an increase in thyroid cancer.

MISSED DOSE

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if this occurred while taking your next dose, skip the dose and take only your next dose. Do not take a double dose.

STORAGE

Proscar is stored at room temperature below 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees C). Keep away from heat, moisture and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Proscar out of children and away from pets.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

Before taking Proscar, tell your doctor if you have an allergic reaction to this drug, or a similar medicine called dutasteride (Avodart). Tell your doctor if you have:

• liver disease or abnormal liver enzyme tests;
• prostate cancer;
• disorders of the muscles of the bladder;
• urethral stricture
• If you are unable to urinate.

Proscar should never be taken for women or children. Proscar can be absorbed through the skin, so women and children are forbidden to touch the pills. Although Proscar is not intended for use by women, this medication can cause congenital malformations of the fetus. If a woman accidentally in contact with the drug, you need to rinse your mouth or stomach immediately.

SIDE EFFECTS

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Proscar and seek emergency medical attention:

• an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or hives);
• very irregular or rapid heartbeat;
• confusion or unusual behavior.

Other, less serious side effects may also occur. Keep taking Proscar and talk to your doctor if you experience

• dizziness;
• anxiety, irritability, nervousness
• tremor (shaking);
• a headache;
• flushing of the skin.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or you frequent.
